Lumbago Treatment in Paris : Chiropractor
Book an appointment on DoctolibYes, a chiropractor can treat lumbago quickly by restoring mobility to locked lumbar vertebrae. Spinal adjustment relieves acute pain, reduces muscle spasm, and allows faster recovery than rest alone.
Lumbago is acute lower back pain that can be extremely debilitating. Chiropractic care offers natural and effective relief.
Sophie Baltaci, IFEC-qualified chiropractor and AFC member, supported by her associate Carla Petit, regularly treats patients with acute lumbago at her practice in Paris's 2nd arrondissement. Chiropractic care often provides rapid relief by directly addressing the mechanical cause of the spinal lock.
Contrary to popular belief, prolonged rest is not recommended for lumbago. Early chiropractic care combined with a gradual return to activity gives the best results.

Lumbago Symptoms
Lumbago manifests as sharp, sudden pain in the lower back, often accompanied by muscle stiffness.
Acute pain and locking
The pain of lumbago is intense, often described as a stabbing pain in the lower back. It comes on suddenly, sometimes during an everyday movement. The back locks and movement becomes very limited.
Contracture musculaire
The lumbar paraspinal muscles contract strongly in response to the pain. This protective contraction worsens the locking and the pain. The lumbar area is often visibly shifted (antalgic posture).
Limitation fonctionnelle
Getting up, sitting down, bending or walking becomes difficult or even impossible. The pain can radiate to the buttocks but usually does not travel down the leg (unlike sciatica).
Causes of Lumbago
Lumbago can be triggered by sudden movements, lifting heavy loads, or prolonged poor posture.
Triggering factors
A wrong move, lifting a heavy load, a sneeze or a sudden twisting motion can trigger lumbago. However, the trigger is often just the last straw on top of underlying issues.
Predisposing factors
A sedentary lifestyle, lack of flexibility, excess weight, poor posture at work or chronic stress weaken the back and increase the risk of lumbago. Repeated episodes may signal an underlying problem.
Chiropractic Treatment for Lumbago
Chiropractic uses gentle spinal adjustments to restore mobility and relieve pain.
Acute phase: releasing the lock
In the acute phase, gentle techniques help release contractions and gradually restore mobility. Adjustments are adapted to the intensity of the pain and the patient's tolerance.
Recovery phase
Once the lock-up is released, treatment focuses on fully restoring lumbar mobility and correcting the underlying vertebral dysfunctions. This phase is essential to prevent recurrence.
Preventing recurrence
Lumbar strengthening exercises and ergonomic advice are provided. For patients at risk of recurrence, regular follow-up may be recommended.
Lumbago or sciatica: how to tell the difference?
Lumbago is distinct from sciatica in terms of pain location. With lumbago, pain remains localized in the lower back, while sciatica is characterized by pain radiating down the leg along the sciatic nerve. However, untreated lumbago can progress to sciatica if the underlying disc herniation worsens.
Chiropractic management also differs. Acute lumbago requires rapid unlocking of the lumbar vertebrae, while sciatica demands a more gradual nerve decompression approach. In both cases, an accurate diagnosis is essential to tailor the treatment. Our Paris 2nd arrondissement clinic has the expertise to treat both conditions.
Practical tips for managing lumbago
During a lumbago episode, a few simple steps can speed your recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence.
- Apply cold (an ice pack wrapped in a cloth) during the first 48 hours, then alternate with heat to relax the muscles.
- Keep moving as much as possible: gentle walking is preferable to strict bed rest, which can worsen stiffness.
- When bending down, bend your knees while keeping your back straight rather than leaning forward : this reduces pressure on your lower back.
- Seek urgent care if the pain is accompanied by loss of sensation in the legs, urinary difficulties, or unexplained fever.
Treatment results
Most patients feel significant improvement from the very first session, with reduced pain and better mobility. 2 to 4 sessions are generally enough to treat an acute lumbago. Patients who come in quickly recover faster.
